An IoT Flow Runtime is an OCI native resource that provides a managed Node-RED runtime within an IoT domain.

Use an IoT Flow Runtime to build, deploy, and run flows that integrate IoT devices, device hosts, data hosts, applications, file storage, and external network endpoints. Each IoT Flow Runtime is a compartment-scoped resource associated with an [IoT domain](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/domains.htm "An IoT domain is located in a specific compartment within a domain group and receives data on a unique device endpoint that connects to a dedicated database instance and schema.").

IoT domain administrators can [create Flow Runtimes](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/create-iot-flow-runtime.htm#top "Create an IoT Flow Runtime in an IoT domain.") for different integration workloads, [activate](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/activate-iot-flow-runtime.htm "Activate an inactive IoT Flow Runtime.") or [deactivate](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/deactivate-iot-flow-runtime.htm "Deactivate an active IoT Flow Runtime, to disable or pause the IoT flow runtime, so no messages are processed.") a runtime to control usage, [configure Node-RED system-console logs](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/configure-logs-flow-runtimes.htm "Send Node-RED system-console logs from an IoT Flow Runtime to OCI Logging in the customer tenancy, generate a test message, and verify that the message is available."), define its [network configuration](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/configure-iot-flow-runtime-network-access.htm "Define the subnet and network security groups in an IoT Flow Runtime's network configuration."), attach [File Storage mounts](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/configure-iot-flow-runtime-storage-access.htm "Add up to 5 File Storage mounts to an IoT flow runtime's network configuration."), review [metrics](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/metrics-reference.htm#flow-runtime-metrics "Review metrics and dimensions for IoT Flow Runtime resources.") and [events](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/events.htm "Review the Events service event types emitted for OCI IoT domain group, domain, and Flow Runtime lifecycle operations."), and use [IAM policies for Flow Runtime access to OCI resources](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/Identity/policyreference/iot-policy-reference.htm).

Developers can open the [Node-RED editor](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/node-red.htm#top "Use the OCI-integrated Node-RED editor to build and deploy flows, configure Oracle Database and OCI nodes, and collaborate with other authorized users.") from the OCI Console without maintaining another set of credentials.

Each IoT Flow Runtime has read access to the [IoT database schema](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/iot-domain-database-schema.htm#top "Use the Internet of Things (IoT) domain database schema to access the metadata and data from the digital twin resources associated with an IoT domain.") for its associated [IoT domain](https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/Content/internet-of-things/domains.htm#top "An IoT domain is located in a specific compartment within a domain group and receives data on a unique device endpoint that connects to a dedicated database instance and schema."), and a flow runtime specific schema with read-write access for data that [Node-RED](https://nodered.org/docs/user-guide/editor/) flows need to store.
