Most B2B marketing teams have already figured out where it fits: first drafts, research, repurposing content, automating the repetitive parts of a workflow. That's the right use of it. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞. Deciding which technical angle will resonate with a specific engineering audience, knowing when a claim is going to get picked apart by someone who does this work every day, or understanding the difference between content that sounds credible and content that is credible. Those aren't tasks you can just automate because they're the reason technical marketing is hard in the first place. AI is a useful tool. It's not a substitute for knowing what you're talking about. - There's a difference between a technical overview and a technical argument, and most B2B content is the first one when it should be the second. A technical overview describes what a product does, how it works, and what it's built on. It's accurate and comprehensive and also gives a reader no particular reason to care. A technical argument starts with a real problem, explains why existing approaches fall short, and makes a specific case for why this approach works better. 𝐈𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡. Buyers read technical arguments. They skim technical overviews. If your content library is full of the overviews and light on the argument, that's worth fixing. - Demand generation and lead generation are not the same thing, and conflating them is one of the more expensive mistakes in B2B marketing. Lead generation is transactional: get someone to raise their hand, capture their information, pass them to sales. It works when there's already awareness and intent. When there isn't, it produces a lot of form fills from people who wanted the gated content and have no real interest in the product. 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞. It's the technical content that shows up when an engineer is researching a problem, the post that makes someone think "these people actually understand what I'm dealing with." It's slower, harder to attribute, and almost impossible to tie directly to a single quarter's pipeline. If your pipeline feels full but your close rate is low, it's worth asking which one you've actually been investing in. - There's still time to submit your work to [edge lab LIVE!](https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/edgelab-live/?trk=organization_guest_main-feed-card-text)–don't miss out. That mismatch is where a lot of technical marketing budgets get wasted. A campaign optimized for short-cycle conversion doesn't map well onto a buying process where the buyer evaluating your product in January might not have budget approval until Q3. The content that wins those deals isn't the content that converts fastest; 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐱 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭. Building a marketing program for that sales cycle is hard, but it's also the only version that converts. There are a lot of technical conferences. A three-minute explainer video works well when the concept has a visual component that's hard to convey in writing, like a physical product demo, a workflow, or a before-and-after comparison. 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 because video moves at a fixed pace, and engineers who want the specifics will skim a written document in thirty seconds versus watching an eight minute video on it. The companies that use video well in technical marketing are using it for the things written content can't convey as easily, and everything else is just more expensive. - The majority of product briefs get written once, usually around a launch, and never touched again. By the time sales is six months into conversations with prospects they've learned things about the real buying triggers, the objections that keep coming up, and the language that actually resonates. But almost none of that makes it back into the product brief. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐰. A product brief that gets updated is a different kind of asset than one that sits in a shared drive untouched for two years. Most companies have the second kind.
