2026 has been a somewhat frustrating year for Broadcom ($AVGO) investors.

The company, once seen as one of the biggest winners of the AI buildout, has continued to underperform most of its peers by a wide margin - up just +2.8% YTD, vs. +71% for the $SOXX ETF.

Source: Koyfin, 2026.

Its valuation multiple has also compressed significantly, from 33.9x fwd P/E at the beginning of the year to just 22x today.

And it’s not hard to understand why…

The news flow has been flooded with headlines raising concerns around the company:

- On August 17, a SemiAnalysis client note circulated saying Google is working with AMD on a TPU project for the v10 generation.
- Then, on August 19 before the market opened, Marvell filed an 8-K disclosing a custom semiconductor agreement with Google, signed on July 29, backed by a warrant giving Google the right to acquire up to 58M Marvell shares at $206.58 - worth ~$12.2B if fully exercised.
- Running underneath both developments is the older story that Google’s customer-owned-tooling team, working with MediaTek, has been building a parallel TPU path since 2025.

Meanwhile, BofA published a credit note modeling a cumulative $370B in contingent exposure related to Broadcom’s AI XPV financing platform if it scales to its full 20GW design capacity, while also downgrading the company’s bond rating.

You can probably guess how the market interpreted all of this...

“Broadcom’s Google franchise is being competed away, while the company is financing its own demand just to keep the orders flowing.”

**Will Broadcom still be a long-term winner in the AI race, or is it simply a declining company self-financing its own sales?**

Throughout this article, we’ll break down the recent news surrounding Google TPUs and the competitive pressure on Broadcom, while also examining the company’s true competitive advantage and its deployment pipeline.

## 1\. Google Competition: Marvell ($MRVL)

Let’s start with the most recent - and perhaps the most impactful - development of them all: the deal between Google and Marvell, under which the semiconductor company issued Google a stock warrant to acquire up to **58.97M shares at a fixed exercise price of $206.58/ share ($12.2B).**
