New rack-mount and single-frame systems give enterprises more flexibility as data center space, cooling, and AI demands intensify.

IBM has introduced rack-mount versions of its z17 mainframe and LinuxONE systems, allowing customers to install core IBM Z components directly into industry-standard 19-inch racks alongside existing infrastructure. The move is designed to help enterprises contend with record-low data center vacancy, rising colocation costs, and the [cooling demands](https://www.datacenterknowledge.com/cooling/the-breaking-points-cooling-struggles-to-keep-pace-with-ai-density) of AI-centric deployments.

The announcement expands IBM’s Z and LinuxONE portfolios with new single-frame and rack-mount configurations, a lower-cost LinuxONE Express system, and new infrastructure management software. The single-frame systems ship preassembled as turnkey appliances, while the rack-mount option integrates into customer-owned or third-party cabinets and provides space for Ethernet switches.

“This is the ability to have the mainframe components be placed into a client rack at the client facility,” said Tina Tarquinio, chief product officer for IBM Z and LinuxONE, in a media briefing. “You could start to imagine if you were to put the mainframe components in the rack along with switches or tape or DASD, you can really start to build a very strong but small footprint for high capability.”

## Space, Cooling, and Rack-Mount Flexibility

Industry analysts say the new form factors respond to mounting pressure on enterprise data centers.

“As data center space and, crucially, cooling options are increasingly top of mind for many enterprises, IBM allowing customers to make better use of data center space and use custom racks with built-in cooling functionality is crucial,” said Steven Dickens, CEO and principal analyst at HyperFRAME Research. “As AI puts more constraints on the data center, IBM allowing optionality and flexibility will be welcomed by enterprise customers.”

Andrew Crimmins, IBM master inventor and principal product manager for IBM Z, said during the media briefing that the rack-mount option supports deployment scenarios in [colocation facilities](https://www.datacenterknowledge.com/colocation/a-buyer-s-guide-to-data-center-colocation-space) and customer-owned racks. For simpler deployment, he noted that the single-frame systems arrive fully assembled: “You open a wooden crate... roll it into place, and plug in power and I/O, and you’re off.”

## Deployment Option: Rack-Mount vs. Turnkey Single-Frame

IBM executives said the smaller systems target both existing mainframe customers and organizations running Linux workloads that require high availability and security, including those in regulated sectors such as finance, insurance, and healthcare. The company also pointed to [emerging regulatory requirements](https://www.datacenterknowledge.com/compliance/how-sovereign-cloud-is-opening-new-opportunities-for-data-center-providers) that demand workloads remain within national borders; the compact form factors are intended to support regional deployments without building new data centers.

Positioned as a lower-cost entry point, LinuxONE Express is a rack-mounted system that IBM said starts at approximately $165,000 – marking the first IBM Z or LinuxONE system to have publicly available entry pricing.

Dickens said the lower entry price and IBM’s manufacturing model could become competitive advantages as enterprises navigate supply-chain volatility. “Enterprises can order this system and take delivery in days, rather than months or even quarters for commodity x86 servers,” he said. “Just being able to buy a server and have price certainty could be enough for them to consider a LinuxONE system for their Linux workloads.”

## AI Capabilities and Software Updates

The new systems retain the AI capabilities introduced with the IBM z17 earlier this year, including the IBM Telum II processor and the Spyre AI Accelerator for in-transaction AI inference and generative AI workloads. IBM said the new configurations support up to 82 processor cores and up to 18 TB of memory across two processor drawers.

During the media briefing, executives highlighted use cases spanning fraud detection, anti-money laundering, encryption, and high-availability workloads.

Alongside the hardware, IBM announced IBM Infrastructure Management for Z and LinuxONE, IBM COBOL Elevate for z/OS, and expanded post-quantum cryptography features across the portfolio.

IBM said the IBM z17 single-frame and rack-mount systems, LinuxONE Rockhopper 5, and LinuxONE Express will be generally available on Aug. 12, 2026. IBM Infrastructure Management for Z and LinuxONE becomes available on Aug. 14, followed by IBM COBOL Elevate for z/OS on Sept. 18.
