两个科学家团队进行的独立研究，报告了基于硅的量子计算芯片能够执行对实现量子计算至关重要的基本运算。相关研究结果7月29日发表于《自然》。

为在商业环境下执行计算，量子处理芯片需要有大量的量子比特（qubits，一种信息单位），同时需要实现大规模制造和集成。硅基纯交换型量子比特被认为是实现这一过程的候选方案，但目前的版本仍需通过大量布线才能与周围的电子器件相连，而该过程产生的热量可能会破坏量子比特中存储的信息。
在其中一项研究中，美国加利福尼亚州HRL实验室的量子团队与合作者，通过将控制系统集成于同一平台的硅基量子处理器中解决了这一问题。研究人员将电子控制系统维持在低温环境下，类似于量子计算机本身所处的环境。这一方法减少了控制电子元件可能向敏感的量子比特传导的热量，从而能在计算过程中执行重复纠错。
利用一个最多容纳18个量子比特的处理器，研究团队在7个量子比特上观察到量子纠错协议。
在另一篇独立论文中，荷兰代尔夫特理工大学的Brennan Undseth和同事致力于利用移动量子比特实现长程相互作用。该装置在4个静止量子比特（作者称其为“公交站”）之间来回发送一个移动量子比特。结果显示，芯片成功执行了“多量子比特奇偶校验位测量”，这是量子纠错所需的过程，表明它具有改善量子芯片内长程连接途径的潜力。
在一篇同时发表的新闻与观点文章中，英国牛津大学的Natalia Ares指出，硅基量子处理器能否重现传统半导体芯片的崛起，目前还是一个未知数，但“这些研究凸显了打造实用量子计算机的挑战，既是工程学问题也是物理学问题，并预示这一目标正以非常快的速度走向实际应用”。
