AI data centers consolidate compute into large, centralized facilities that process AI workloads remotely. For cities running traffic signals, safety cameras, and utility grids, that architecture introduces 100-200ms round-trip latency, data sovereignty risk, and single points of failure that edge-native infrastructure eliminates. The right architecture for urban AI is hybrid: edge as the real-time decision layer, data center handling aggregation and orchestration.

## What Do AI Data Centers Actually Do?

AI data centers are large, centralized facilities purpose-built to concentrate compute power for training large AI models and running batch inference at hyperscale.
