There are four types of digital twins: component twins (a single sensor or part), asset twins (a complete physical unit), system twins (networks of assets), and process twins (end-to-end operational workflows). Each level builds on the one below it. Together they give cities the full stack needed to move from reactive monitoring to proactive, real-time urban operations.

## What Is a Digital Twin, Exactly?

A digital twin is a live virtual replica of a physical object, system, or process, continuously synchronized with its real-world counterpart through sensor data and telemetry. The model does more than mirror current state. It enables simulation, prediction, and autonomous response. Using digital twins, cities and enterprises can gain deeper visibility, optimize workflows to prevent bottlenecks, automate awareness, and predict future outcomes.

In practice, twins are built from BIM models, reality capture such as LiDAR scans and photogrammetry, and live sensor telemetry, fused into one continuously updated model. The term covers a spectrum from a single embedded sensor to an entire metropolitan infrastructure network. What distinguishes a digital twin from a static 3D model or a dashboard is that synchronization loop: the physical world updates the digital model in near-real time, and decisions made in the digital model flow back to physical systems.
