More tangibly, it incorporates business-related impact targets and KPIs, which apparently highlight sustainability’s (or ESG, whichever you want to call it) capacity to generate value. Telefónica claims sustainability will help to strengthen commercial opportunities through products and services, such as its Eco Smart product, which helps residential customers and businesses in their decarbonisation efforts, apparently. The operator is raising its “climate ambition”, aiming to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90%, and its Scope 3 emissions by 56% by 2030, with a view to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, including across the value chain. Telefónica also aims to achieve zero waste by 2030 through the reuse and refurbishment of equipment, which it manages to frame as European technological sovereignty win due to the “circularity of assets.” It also lists measures to adapt to climate change by strengthening the resilience of infrastructure and promoting long-term renewable energy supply agreements. It says will strengthen its initiatives aimed at “promoting inclusive digitalisation, improving connectivity in rural areas, and responsible digitalisation, with a particular focus on the protection of children, accessibility and people’s digital wellbeing.” Which could presumably mean any number of things. The operator adds it is also promoting a governance model for AI, alongside a privacy framework and holistic security management. “All of this helps to minimise risks, capitalise on business opportunities and position the company as a leading player in reliable digital infrastructure and services,” we’re told. The plan also is concerned with a number of other areas including the development, attraction and retention of talent, the sustainability of its own television productions, and integrating ESG criteria into decision-making, the supply chain, and capital allocation. “Sustainability is a source of growth, efficiency, resilience and trust when you truly integrate it into the business. With this ambitious and rigorous Plan, we are strengthening our competitiveness, creating value for customers, shareholders and society,” said Maya Ormazabal, Global Chief Sustainability Officer at Telefónica. “In this plan, Telefónica is raising its climate ambition with specific targets that reinforce its commitment to renewables, energy efficiency and the circular economy. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040”. As ever its laudable if companies can reduce their impact on the environment, though the announcements about measures in pursuit of this goal do tend towards the vague and waffly. The bottom line message appears to be a net-zero emissions target by 2040, and that actually chasing this will help the business in other ways as well.
