SK Telecom will deploy AI-RAN in support of a government-led scheme to put physical AI through its paces.

It's called the Hyper-AI Network Infrastructure Development project, and it's being organised by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), and the National Intelligence Society Agency (NIA). At a higher level, it falls under the government's national AI Highway initiative, which is driving the nationwide deployment of AI infrastructure.

SKT's AI-RAN will be used to trial three use cases in various phases over the next year or more.

First up, four-legged robots will patrol hazardous areas within a factory, transmitting high-definition video in real-time. SKT's AI-RAN will analyse the video to detect risks and enable real-time control over the machines.

The second revolves around improvements to moving materials around on-site. In this case, an unmanned autonomous vehicle gathers and transmits LiDAR information, which the AI-RAN uses to create a digital twin of the plant.

These first two trials will take place this year under controlled conditions at chemical manufacturer SK Incheon Petrochemical's site in Incheon and in a physical AI lab in Pangyo.

If all goes well, the next step will be to conduct trials of these use cases in a live setting at car maker KG Mobility's plant in Pyeongtaek some time next year.

These will be followed by a trial of use case number three. SKT calls it Humanoid Low Power mode, a proposed method of extending a robot's battery life by distributing AI workloads to AI-RAN base stations, thereby reducing on-device computation.

"SKT is pursuing this project to verify ultra-low latency, high-reliability, and ultra-precision network technologies in industrial settings, which serve as the core foundation for the national agenda project, the 'AI Highway'," the telco said. "For physical AI – such as robots – to perform perception, judgment, and control in real-time on-site, it requires communication capable of exchanging large volumes of data without delay, as well as supporting infrastructure that can process AI computations beyond the robots' ability to handle on their own."

SKT has partnered with some big names to make this happen.

Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and private mobile networking specialist HFR will provide the kit and related network and software solutions. Physical AI services and hardware will be supplied by AI vision specialist Intellivix, LiDAR maker Seoul Robotics, and AI platform provider Clevi.

In addition to rolling out and operating AI-RAN infrastructure, SKT will also implement network slicing, and a service management and orchestration (SMO) platform to enhance the capabilities of the network.

It will also evaluate different methods of operating AI servers and user plane function (UPF) gateways to optimise its architecture for physical AI workloads. SKT also plans to compare the performance of different configurations of various AI-RAN silicon options, including CPUs and GPUs, to see which might be the superior choice for AI-RAN.

"The demonstration results secured from this project are expected to lead to global standardisation and the expansion of the ecosystem," said SKT

"SKT plans to establish key performance indicators based on data obtained through cross-verification of various manufacturers, structures, and services, and incorporate them into standard discussions of global standardisation organisations such as O-RAN and 3GPP. Furthermore, the company plans to disseminate these demonstration results across the entire global ecosystem through the AI-RAN Alliance."

There is a fair degree of industry hype surrounding AI-RAN and physical AI at the moment, so there will undoubtedly be no shortage of interest in SKT's results.
