## Nvidia said that liquid cooling could significantly reduce water use in data centres.

As artificial intelligence (AI) use continues to grow, so have concerns about the amount of water consumed by the data centres that support the technology.

**What is liquid cooling?**  
  
Liquid cooling is a method used to keep computers and AI servers from overheating. Instead of using fans and air conditioning to cool the surrounding air, it uses a liquid that flows directly around or near the computer chips to absorb and carry away heat.  
  
The technology is becoming more common as [AI systems](https://www.cnbctv18.com/world/nvidia-ceo-says-ai-should-be-used-by-everyone-calls-for-new-social-norms-19926825.htm) use powerful chips that generate large amounts of heat. Because liquid removes heat more effectively than air, it can help data centres run more efficiently and use less energy.  
  
**Nvidia's take on liquid cooling**  
  
[Nvidia](https://www.cnbctv18.com/tags/nvidia.htm) cited research from the Manhattan Institute on social media platform X, claiming that data centres account for only about 0.2% of daily water use in the US. "That number has dramatically decreased in the past few years due to a new method: liquid cooling," the company said.  
  
Nvidia said newer AI facilities using 45-degree Celsius liquid cooling can switch from traditional cooling towers, which consume large amounts of water, to ‘dry coolers’ that use little or no water. According to the company, this could cut cooling-water use from around 2.6 million gallons per megawatt each year to nearly zero.  
  
"Liquid cooling enables AI factories to be both water and energy efficient, while creating opportunities for heat reuse and dispersal to local communities, allowing these factories to become energy grid assets," Nvidia wrote on X.

**Other research papers on liquid cooling tech**  
  
Microsoft's two-year study examined different cooling methods used in data centres and found that liquid-based systems, such as cold plates and immersion cooling, used less energy, consumed less water and produced fewer greenhouse gas emissions.  
  
According to the researchers, liquid cooling reduced water consumption by 31% to 52%, energy use by 15% to 20%, and greenhouse gas emissions by 15% to 21% compared with conventional air-cooling systems.  
  
Another research published in Science Direct notes that a typical air-cooled server rack can handle around 20-30 kilowatts of power. With liquid cooling, that capacity can increase to five times that value.  
  
AI servers using Nvidia's latest GB200 platform, especially the B200 chip, produce so much heat that they require direct liquid cooling.  
  
Hardware maker Supermicro says it had already shipped more than 2,000 liquid-cooled AI server racks by August 2024. The company is also expanding production to around 5,000 racks per month. Reports from research firm IDTechEx suggest that Supermicro may control about 75% of the liquid-cooled AI server rack market.  
  
The liquid cooling market is growing rapidly. The market is valued at around $5.65 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow at a strong rate of about 24% every year from 2024 to 2034, according to Data Center Liquid Cooling Market - A Global and Regional Analysis.
