Google has shared the design of a new cooling system that can run liquid-cooled servers without expensive retrofits of existing data centers.

The Brazos cooling design is a sidecar rack that can cool an adjacent 60 kW rack inside existing air-cooled halls and can be deployed one rack at a time. It uses a closed-loop liquid-to-air cooling system, and allows users to add denser racks incrementally, and without re-plumbing the building.

Google said it will open-source the specifications through industry forums in the coming months, and its manufacturing partners are ready to produce the design. The company shared its plans for Brazos on the [Google Cloud blog](https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/systems/brazos-liquid-cooling-system-for-air-cooled-data-centers).

## AI Racks Without Retrofits

Brazos addresses the challenge in the transition to AI infrastructure. AI chips can now exceed 1,000 watts of thermal design power, beyond the effective limits of standard air cooling. Retrofitting a whole facility with chilled water loops requires extensive capital and time. Brazos sidesteps that by isolating the cooling to the rack.

The Brazos design uses an internal cooling loop at the component level and rejects the heat into the data center’s hot aisle through high-efficiency liquid-to-air heat exchangers.

> “Data center facility updates can take months,” wrote Google engineers Jorge Padilla and Madhusudan Iyengar in announcing the system. “Brazos breaks with this by allowing simple, one-rack-at-a-time installations … This plug-and-play architecture can be rapidly installed in any legacy facility that has sufficient power and standard air handling.”

Google shared a configuration using an Open Compute Project ORv3 sidecar, with three cooling units serving an adjacent IT rack. Here’s an overview of the specs:

- **Thermal capacity:** a 60 kW nominal load per rack across three modular cooling units, each chassis occupying 11 Open Units of rack height
- **Coolant:** Works with deionized water or a 25 percent propylene glycol mixture
- **Power:** A 40 to 60 V DC input designed to connect directly to standard rack busbars
- **Safety:** Certified to UL/CSA/IEC 62368-1, with built-in leak detection and pressure relief valves
- **Controls:** A built-in human-machine interface for local monitoring, with remote management over Modbus over TCP

Each Brazos chassis sits on slides for rapid component access, and the pumps and fans are built as hot-swappable field-replaceable units.

## Coming to OCP, and Data Halls Near You

The Brazos announcement tracks with Google’s 2025 unveiling of its megawatt-scale in-row coolant distribution unit (CDU), Project Deschutes. Google contributed the design to the Open Compute Project in the spring, and by the time of the OCP Global Summit in October, multiple vendors were showing off real-world 2 MW versions on the expo floor.

The [Open Compute Project](https://www.opencompute.org/) was created by Facebook in 2011 to share its custom server and data center designs, and has proven to be a venue where rivals can find common ground. Microsoft and Google joined the effort, teaming on open hardware designs for hyperscale.

The Brazos design offers runway for facilities that otherwise might be unable to support liquid cooling. The Google team didn’t outline how it has been using Brazos, but an obvious option is to gradually expand inference workloads across portions of its existing data center footprint.

Brazos is designed to support 60 kilowatts per rack, a major upgrade from the 10 to 20 kW of a typical air-cooled rack, but short of the 130 kW densities seen with recent NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs.
